ABOUT

I believe that the most efficient set is a set that runs on respect, clarity, and good humor. My job as a First Assistant Director is to help create an environment where everyone — from the director and producers to the newest production assistant — can do their best work.

Prep is key.  For me that starts with understanding the director's perspective on the detail of every shot, the overall goals of the project, the relationships with all the creatives and the client and how this project fits in to the overall trajectory of the director's work.  My background in practical filmmaking makes me uniquely capable to anticipate the wrinkles in the cinematographer's challenges.  I lean on those skills every day.  The shooting strategy I recommend factors all that in.

Then, on the day, I keep things moving efficiently while keeping the mood positive. Communications between departments and with my producing partners is key.  Those with line item responsibility need to know minute by minute how the time is being spent.  Moreover, when everyone feels respected and supported, the work gets better and the day goes smoother — it’s as simple as that.

My diverse background in dance, theater, film, leadership training, and practical cinematography helps me understand the needs of both creative and technical professionals. I aim for the same balance every day: listen well, plan carefully, and then act decisively and with respect so the whole team can do their best work.
